tipping policy
Over the weekend, my daughter and I will receive a total of three one-hour
aerial silk lessons from a professional instructor.

Is it appropriate and/or expected to tip said instructor? And if so, how much?

Three one hour lessons in a single weekend? Oh, you're going to be in PAIN. :)

(Which does not actually answer your question. If the professional instruction is part of a school program, even privately as part of a school program, my instinct would be no... but I could certainly be wrong.)

It's two lessons for her and one for me.

These are private lessons from an instructor who normally teaches at
a circus school with which we are not otherwise affiliated.

If the lessons are at the school with prices set on the school's page... I would still assume no.

And that makes much more sense. She seems to be in good enough shape that 2 1 hour lessons in a weekend won't hurt quite as much :) I thought they were 3 shared lessons.

(Although I have to admit that depending on what we're doing, 1 hour shared with 2 other people can completely wipe me out.)

Yes, we are paying prices listed on the school's web page. Sorry
to have not shared this info upfront.

If they're getting the entire amount you're paying, then I would say no. If they're getting a cut (with the rest going to their affiliated institution or whatever), then I would say yes.

I certainly don't expect it. One of my students brought me some homemade water bagels one day.

to whom/where are you going?

Kendra Greaves at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. Do you
know her?

Yes. I don't know her *well*, having only met her in person once. I did not know that she was in Philly now. Shana Kennedys new space in Philly is very nice.

I think it's almost *always* appropriate to offer arts professionals a little extra payment, if you feel inclined.

In situations like this I usually approach the instructor discreetly with cash mostly but not entirely tucked out of view, and say something like "I really appreciated today's class. Would it be appropriate if I wanted to offer you a little tip?" (and show the money a little more so they don't think it's sexual favors I'm talking about. ;)

Mostly I've heard, "If you want to, that's very kind of you. Thank you." Sometimes instead I've gotten, "Thank you, that's very kind of you, but I can't take tips. Thanks for the offer, though. I appreciate that." If I was working in a situation where I couldn't take tips, I'd still appreciate the implicit appreciation expressed.

I generally try to offer 10% if I can. I'd offer more if I had more to spend.
